JOSH BENNETT

Member Since 2013

With 151 check-ins in 2014, you probably recognize Josh’s face. Now’s your chance to get to know him a little better in this month’s Member Spotlight.

How did you start climbing?
Josh: I was introduced to climbing right at Edgeworks by Matt Stoner. I was supremely confident I would cruise everything, when I couldn’t… well it got me hooked. Not sure why I like climbing so much… just sorta clicks.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?
Josh: I climb at Edgeworks because of the people, the setters, and friends. The problems and routes are always good and you always get a smile when you walk through the door. It’s just a great environment… never met someone I didn’t like at Edgeworks.  Also it’s super close to my house!

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?
Josh: GOLD BAR!!! I’m a freak for Gold Bar! The hike, the seclusion, the view… and that stone quality… oooh soo good. Anyone wanna take a trip?!

What do you do when you’re not climbing?
Josh: Hike a lot, I’m always running around trying to find the newest adventure. Lots of hiking and trying to see new things and just being out in nature.. But mostly climbing or watching /reading something about climbing…. I may be obsessed.

What are some interesting facts that you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?
Josh: Red, Yellow, and Blue are not the true primary colors. Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow are.

Taylor Easley

Member since 2012

A dedicated climber, Taylor has been known to brave 16 degree temps and forego sleep for 36 hours all in the interest of an awesome climbing trip and all while working the graveyard shift.

Get to know Taylor…

How did you start climbing?
Taylor: Not long after Ben McMullen signed up for his membership, he invited me to go climbing with him. Needless to say, after that first day with blistered hands and pumped forearms I was hooked for life.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?
Taylor: I started climbing at Edgeworks because it was the only gym that I knew of at the time. However, the reasons I keep coming back are because of the great community, the knowledgeable and friendly staff, and the route setting is second to none.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?
Taylor: Man, that’s a tough question. I have not been too many places yet but, I would have to go with Leavenworth. Bouldering in Icicle Canyon is always an amazing time with a beautiful backdrop.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?
Taylor: Well, I am definitely a nerd so I fill a good bit of time with reading, video games, board games and other such activities. Apart from climbing the only other sport I play on a regular basis is soccer (the greatest game known to man!).

What are some interesting facts that you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?
Taylor: Hmm… Oh, I got a good one. A picosecond is a unit of time that equals 10^(-12) so 0.000 000 000 001 seconds. One picosecond is the length of time it takes for light to travel approx. 0.3mm.

Rocky Johnson
Edgeworks Member since 2004

Rocky has been a member of the climbing community in large for a long, loooong time. His countless climbing achievements include being the very first Edgeworks member and also putting up the classic “Rogers Corner” at Index.

How did you start climbing?
Rocky: I started climbing in the 1950s. No really sure of the date: time really didn’t matter to a kid. Started scrambling (bouldering) on some rocks near my home in Denver. My scout troop had an advisor that was a great climber: Joe Stettner. He took us rock climbing on Longs Peak.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?
Rocky: Edgeworks provides a wonderful, fun community of like minded people who value vertical movement, Grace and Power. It is a place where I can connect to my love of climbing and in a remote way to the mountains.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?
Rocky: In alpine areas. Beautiful alpine peaks, rock and ice. There is nothing like immersing yourself in the alpine world and moving freely over sublime terrain. Rock peaks, glaciers, ridges, meadows and forest all have great appeal.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?
Rocky: Not sure where all the time goes.

What are some interesting facts that you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?
Rocky: Climbed with Fred Beckey and Lief N. Patterson in the early 1970s, I met Gaston Rebuffat, Henry Barber, Royal Robbins, Yvon Chouinard, Don Jensn, Mugs Stump, Jim Bridwell and countless other people with whom I share a bond: the bond of the rope.

Member Spotlight: Oct 2014

mark_elena header 2

Mark Schultz and Elena Moreno, members since 2011.

Nominated by the Edgeworks staff because they help make the gym a great place to climb!

How did you start climbing?

Elena:  I had camped, scrambled and hiked at Joshua Tree once in college and fell in love with the feeling of using all 4 limbs to get higher off the ground, touching dry, beautiful rock all along the way. I had never been around climbing and knew nothing about it. Then I took a women’s climbing class at REI about 13 years ago. We spent the majority of the class on learning to belay. I had no idea what belaying was. I just wanted to climb. When we finally got the chance to climb the pinnacle, I was enthralled with it every step of the way and just kept going. I was the only one in that class who made it to the top. I was hooked.
Mark: I started climbing with the Olympia Mountaineers when I was in high school. I spent the next few years climbing everything I could, then took a 21 year hiatus from technical climbing. in 2008 A friend invited me to Stone Gardens to take the intro to gym climbing class and I was hooked again. I have been back at it pretty consistently since then.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?

Elena: Oh, so many reasons. 😉 You’re 10 minutes from our house! Seriously, though, the people and the routes are the top 2 reasons. Your front-desk staff know us by name, say hello and goodbye, and always welcome our honest feedback on routes. The other  “regulars” in the gym are sweet and hilarious and feisty, and we love that. And the routes, yes! We’ve always loved your routes and your route-setters, and even though we’ve seen some come and go, there is one thing in common with them all–they genuinely care that people feel challenge, and enjoy the challenge (well, even if a little grunting is part of the deal).
Mark: Because Edgeworks is great. It’s big enough to keep us busy and challenged with lots of great routes and small enough for us to get to know everyone there. We really like being part of the gym community.
_

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?

Elena: They’re each so unique! I guess Vantage has a special little place in my heart.
Mark: I’ve only been climbing outside again for the past 4 years so I’ve had limited exposure to quite a few local areas. I’m just stoked to get outside no matter where it is but, Squamish was definitely awesome and I’m looking forward to getting back to Index.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

Elena: Daydream about retiring early and road-tripping to every National Park.
Mark: Build stuff, hike, make art, do crossword puzzles, think about climbing…
_

What are some interesting facts that you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?

Elena: I often refer to Edgeworks as “my TV” since I’m pretty sure I/we spend as much time at the gym on a given night as most people spend on their couch, watching TV. And… I make homemade tortillas (ever since Mark taught me.) Who’s supposed to be the Mexican in this relationship!? 😉
Mark: Ants, in fact most insects, don’t have lungs. There is an underground alien base on the moon. Jayson’s beard has a name and I’m the only one who knows.
