The McCabe Family | Tim, Hayden, Gen and Frankie

Members since 2015

How did you start climbing?

Tim: Climbing has held a special place in my imagination since I was a child. I devoured every climbing book I could get my hands on as soon as I could read. I really wanted to be Reinhold Messner when I grew up. I did some peak bagging in my early teens with family but did not get my first pair of rock shoes until college and really did not start trying hard until 2 years ago when I brought my daughter Hayden to Edgeworks for our first time. We were hooked and have never looked back.
Hayden: On my 7th birthday my dad wanted us to a father-daughter thing so we went rock climbing at Edgeworks.
Gen: I had never been climbing before I started coming shortly after Tim & Hayden caught the climbing bug. Their enthusiasm is contagious. My only knowledge of rock climbing was the dramatic opening scene of Vertical Limit…which is hilarious to watch now (spoiler alert, except for the dying part, not funny)
Frankie: He was most likely climbing even before he started walking at 9 months old.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?

Tim: The Edgeworks community is amazing. The staff and the members have embraced us like family and are endlessly supportive. I have been to several other rock gyms and while some may have “better” facilities none of them can match the friendliness or sense of community at EW.
Hayden: I like climbing here because the people that work here are awesome and the routes are always fun.
Gen: Our fantastic community keeps me coming back. The staff and members all contribute to such a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. I love our adventurous climbing community!
Frankie: He absolutely adores the Edgeworks staff and his many friends he’s made at the gym.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

Tim: I took up wood working a few years ago.  I make furniture and tables and other silly things.  Some of them are really good and some of them are really good firewood.  So far, I still have all 10 fingers.
Hayden:  I’m 9 years old so I go to school, hang out with my friends and family.  I also play softball and soccer.
Gen: Well besides my 9-5 job & keeping my family of four alive, I play indoor soccer regularly and I’d like to play more tennis.  I’ll play just about any sport for that matter.
Frankie: He loves dinosaurs, animals and cars, in fact next time you see him ask him if he is a t-rex or a tiger that day.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?

Tim: Leavenworth is for lovers and I love Leavenworth. There is world class bouldering, trad and alpine climbing just right outside our back door! Plus, all the German food and liters of beer you can handle! I love climbing outside. It is my favorite thing to do in the world and honestly I do not care where we are climbing as long as we are outside with good friends!
Hayden: I love going to Leavenworth, the feeling of the rock is amazing and the food is great too.
Gen: Smith Rock is such a magical climbing wonderland. It really is my favorite, but I’m happy to go climbing anywhere outside.
Frankie: Leavenworth is his favorite, in fact he has been putting up some FA on the toddler circuit.

What are some interesting facts that you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?

Tim: We have a German Shepard named Bode. He is partially named after six-time Olympic Medalist Bode Miller and partially after Bode, the mystic/surfer/bank robber in the classic film Point Break who was played by Patrick Swayze.
Hayden: Did you know pioneer Job Carr was the founder of Tacoma, and that he was also the first Mayor of the city?
Gen: I’ll just leave you with some words of wisdom “there are plenty of ways to enter the pool, the stairs is not one of them”.
Frankie: Ernest Hemingway one said “There are only three sports: bullfight, motor racing and mountaineering: all the rest are merely games.”

Which do you prefer: top rope, lead, or bouldering?

Tim: Leading and high-ball bouldering.  Both test your resolve and push you to your limits.  I think it is important to explore the things that elicit fear inside of us.  Being able to control those feelings and push on right to the edge is life affirming.
Hayden: BOULDERING!
Gen: Sport climbing, the longer the route the better.
Frankie: He is still working on his top rope skills, only a select few of his favorite people can talk him into putting his harness on, so for now it’s all about bouldering.

What’s your go-to route grade?

Tim: Right now, it is 5.12a sport climbing and V6 outdoor bouldering.  I have been eating lots of salads and drinking less beer to try and make both those happen this climbing season!
Hayden: V3-V4 range with bouldering and like 5.10 range on top rope.
Gen: I’ve been venturing into 5.11 grades indoor which means I’m ready to push my limits this outdoor season, because so far the hardest I’ve lead outside has only been 5.9.
Frankie: Currently projecting 5.15d on gear.

How did you start climbing?

Calvin: Last summer my 9 yr old kept asking me to take her rock climbing. I took her a handful of times. We knew nothing about rock climbing- we’d use all the colors, climb up to the top and come back down. My kids liked it- but I found this to be a terribly boring and pointless sport. I came only to satisfy my kids and it allowed me to spend time with them!
I posted pics of us climbing on Facebook. My uber competitive cousin who is a serious climber commented that we should be climbing 5-10 and higher only! Another time a friend commented on a picture and said- “sure- use all the colors”! Then it clicked in my brain that the numbers corresponded with the grade of difficulty and the point of climbing was to stick with one color and try to complete the route! This was a game changer- climbing went from boredom to fun almost overnight!
We went from coming a few times a month- to coming multiple times a week beginning in November of last year!

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?

Calvin: For sure it’s location- we live in Lakewood- however- we have climbed at a number of other gyms- and my kids and I both heartily agree that Edgeworks has the coolest vibe and great staff. We’ve visited a different gym and their staff were so uppity and strict. It made us appreciate the chill and fun atmosphere at Edgeworks! We also like all of the different events, activities, and challenges that are put on at Edgeworks which keep it fun. We love being a part of the Edgeworks tribe!

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?

Calvin: Because we only started seriously climbing last November, I’ve only been to Smith Rock once to climb outdoors. Learned to do my first lead climb there and really got hooked on outdoor climbing.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

Calvin: I am an avid triathlete so I’m either running, swimming, cycling, or conditioning. Currently I’m training for a couple of races that I had committed to long ago. Truth be told- I look forward to when these races are over so I can focus more time on climbing.

Which do you prefer: top rope, lead, or bouldering?

Calvin: I like all of them- although I spend the most amount of time with the top rope!

What are some interesting facts that you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?

Calvin: Scientific research has shown what happens to the brain during intense exercise. The neurochemicals that are elevated and produced result in all kinds of other amazing benefits. Studies also show a very strong correlation between kids who exercise a lot and how well they perform in school. While I engage in physical activity to reap the benefits that come from exercise, most of the sports take me away from my kids for many hours. I love this sport of climbing- First, because it allows me to spend great quality time with my kids. Secondly, I’m not just watching the kids get exercise- I get to be just as engaged while we’re all challenged at our own individual levels! Thirdly, I know that exercise will benefit my kids academically. If you want your kids to excel in school keep them engaged in physical activity as much as you can!

Tamerea Bassett

Member since 2015

How did you start climbing?

Tamerea: My 1st climbing experience happened 2 years ago when a friend was visiting from Canada and we decided to try out Edgeworks. We had such blast that day and it sparked my interest in the sport. Until that day I had no clue how big it was and how wonderful the climbing community is. It took a year of coming in on and off plus sparatic explorations outside but I made friends at Edgeworks, was brought into the community and then the sport quickly became my passion.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?

Tamerea: The supportive and enthusiastic atmosphere are what keep me coming back. I’m constantly challenged and encourage to try harder and get better. My main goal is to crush. Oh and have fun while doing so…

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?

Tamerea: It’s hard to pick my favorite place I’ve climbed. If I had to choose I’d say Ton sai in Thailand. Aside from the miserable heat and humidity, it’s the most beautiful place. That rock and view from the top make it all worth it.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

Tamerea: Outside of climbing, training to climb and work I like to travel, read, work out and spend the rest of the time with my pup Gizmo. The cutest dog in all the land.

Which do you prefer: top rope, lead, or bouldering?

Tamerea: I am a die hard sport climber and all the bouldering I do in the gym is to train and get strong to crush projects. Although the bouldering has grown on me.

What’s your go-to route grade?

Tamerea: My go to grade in the gym is 5.12 and outside my personal best lead so far is 11b at world wall. I’m still new to leading outdoors and am looking forward to all the climbing trips I have planned this summer – after another grueling training cycle is over!

Erin Edwards

Member since 2011

How did you start climbing?

Erin: I was dating a guy who was a big climber/aplinist. His pictures of the remote places he climbed were inspiring to me. I wanted to go to those amazing places in Washington and beyond. I went to the gym by myself and signed up for ‘Intro to Climbing‘ with Andy and was hooked! I met a group of new ambitious climbers and never stopped.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?

Erin: Edgeworks is not only a fun place to climb but it offers so much more. I enjoy the fitness classes, events, and most of all, the wonderful community it fosters. I’ve met so many great people and built strong friendships here.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?

Erin: Squamish! I love the granite, it gives me confidence like no other place. There are seemingly endless beautiful lines, short approaches, fun routes, and lovely views.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

Erin: I’m currently training for a marathon, so I do a lot of running. I love traveling and am always plotting my next adventure (Bhutan, Nepal, Nicaragua, Angilla planned so far this year). I also enjoy spending time with my active pup and tall boyfriend.

What are some interesting facts that you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?

Erin: The giant pacific octopus is the largest octopus species in the world and the largest one is said to have lived under the narrows bridge in Tacoma. Octopuses have three hearts, as well as special pigments and skin muscles that allow them to change color instantly. Octopuses will also change color while thinking hard to solve puzzles or problems. They collect treasures like shells and other objects to keep in their hiding spots. They can also lose arms to escape harm and regrowth them!!

Which do you prefer: top rope, lead, or bouldering?

Erin: Inside, top rope. I like the movement and option to pause and think about how to solve the problem. Outside, I enjoy the challenge and excitement of leading.

What’s your go-to route grade?

Erin: 5.9 Inside and outside, it’s a fun grade for me. I’m usually engaged but not stressed on good ol’ 5.9.

Dan Bunch

Edgeworks member since 2012

How did you start climbing?

Dan: I have been in the outdoors to recharge since childhood. I came to climbing from mountaineering. My daughter, Serenity, and I love to camp but don’t like to sit around so we needed a father-young daughter outdoor activity. Unlike crampons, they make climbing shoes in kid size so four years ago it became our “thing”.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?

Dan: ….Umm, it rains a lot in Western Washington, so in the off-season we needed a place to practice our skills to take them outside. But for me the absolute best part is, being a single father I have always had a hard time finding good female role models for my daughter and Edgeworks is blessed with amazing women for my daughter to learn from . Staff and customers alike I am so glad to have a place for my daughter to learn and grow surrounded by quality people.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?

Dan: Icicle Creek in Leavenworth by far; we try to spend at least a month every year there.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

Dan: I am a “shop guy” so I build stuff. For instance, my latest project is repurposing scrap railroad track to make an anvil because I’m getting back into blacksmithing.

What are some interesting facts you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?

Dan: I am retired military and worked offshore after that so my entire life has revolved around teamwork and excellence and I see that with the staff here. As a father and climber, I appreciate that more than words can describe.

Which do you prefer: top rope, lead, or bouldering?

Dan: Lead climbing is my favorite by far.

What is your go-to route grade?

Dan: I would call myself a 5.10-11 climber and a 5.9-10- lead.

Welcome: James Pope

?

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Edgeworks’ new Operations Manager yet, here’s a little get-to-know-you interview with James Pope, who joined our staff in mid-December.

He’s new to the PNW, having just moved here from the east coast and Florida, but he’s no stranger to climbing gyms – previously filling the role of Operations Manager at Brooklyn Boulders Somerville (Boston).

How did you start climbing?

My father originally introduced me to climbing but like most Florida natives I started climbing at an indoor climbing gym on the climbing team.

Where is your favorite place to climb?

This is such an unfair question. Which season and what type of climbing? If I absolutely had to pick one area I would say that Rumney in New Hampshire is definitely a favorite!

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

If I can be, you will find me outside. You might see me out on the water fishing, sailing or surfing and if you spot me on land it might be playing a round of golf, tennis or exploring around on a hike. That being said I’m new to the West coast, so sign me up!

Do you have a favorite quote?

The more I learn, the more I learn how little I know. — Socrates

What has been the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

My first job, I was 16 and building docks in Florida. You may not think building docks is very unusual or interesting but that would be before you consider the number of alligators “in my office” everyday!

If you were an animal what would you be?

I would definitely be a Wolf.

How did you start climbing?

Darrell: I started climbing when I got out of the Navy in the early 70s. It started with hikes and scrambles and then from that graduated to vertical climbs, including Mt. Saint Helens and Mt. Rainier. I picked it back up when my son Patrick invited me to a Boy Scout Troop outing at Frenchman’s Coulee in 2009. With Patrick’s encouragement, a trip to Edgeworks soon followed and we were hooked.
Patrick: I started climbing in 2009 as a Venture Scout.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?

Darrell: Routes are changed often enough to keep interest level up and keep you wondering “what’s new to try tonight?” And the people, friendly staff and fellow climbers. If you come in alone, it’s easy to find a belay buddy.
Patrick: There are lots of routes with a wide range of difficulties that are physically and technically challenging. Edgeworks has a great atmosphere and great people.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?

Darrell: Frenchman’s Coulee.
Patrick: Smith Rocks

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

Darrell: Hiking and skiing are two favorite activities. Occasionally, kayaking or trap shooting. Also spending time with friends and family.
Patrick: Hiking, biking, kayaking, trap shooting, hunting and fishing.

What are some interesting facts you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?

Darrell: Patrick is not adopted. Even though he’s much taller, he is my biological son.
Patrick: We both enjoy building and repairing things with our hands.

Which do you prefer: top rope, lead, or bouldering?

Both: Top Rope

What is your go-to route grade?

Darrell: 5.10 and occasionally 5.10+. I like seeing Patrick climb theroutes with longer reaches because he can really use his long arms to pull himself up.
Patrick: 5.10 with big holds spaced far apart.

Karen & Elizabeth Hume

Members since 2013

How did you start climbing?

Karen: I signed Elizabeth and her brother up for a homeschool climbing class. Elizabeth’s skill and passion for climbing led her to join Team Edgeworks last year and she couldn’t be happier. About a month after the kids started climbing, Edgeworks was having a special, a month membership with rental equipment. So, I signed up! I always wanted to try climbing and I immediately loved it!

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?

Elizabeth: “Edgeworks is awesome!”
Karen: I love the staff and the spirit of the community at Edgeworks and there are always new problems to try and solve.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?

Elizabeth: Leavenworth, Swiftwater boulders.
Karen: I am new to climbing outside. My first experience was this summer at Smith Rock State Park and it was great!

What do you do when you’re not climbing?

Karen: Elizabeth is always busy. She loves horse riding, making and editing videos, and taking care of her animals. One of her favorite summer activities is pier jumping into the frigid waters of Commencement Bay with friends. When I am not climbing I enjoy reading, knitting, and working with and walking our two Golden Retrievers.

What are some interesting facts you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?

Karen: A dogs sense of smell is smell is 10,000-100,000 times more acute than a humans. That means on a beach that is 1500 feet long, 150 feet wide and 40 inches deep a dog can detect two grains of sand that smell differently. Or if you make an analogy to vision, what humans can see at a third of a mile a dog could see 3,000 miles away and see just as clearly.

Which do you prefer: top rope, lead, or bouldering?

Elizabeth: Bouldering
Karen: Bouldering is my favorite but, I recently started lead climbing and I like the way
it makes me think differently about the route.

What’s your go-to route grade?

Elizabeth: V-7
Karen: V-4, V-5
