How did you start climbing?
Jim: As it was with most of us, it was a progression, starting first with inspiration. My first inspiration was a Disney movie, Third Man on the Mountain. My dad took me to see it when I was 6 or 7; I was hooked. We lived in Salt Lake at the time and I remember spending most of 2nd and 3rd grade looking out the classroom window at Mt. Olympus figuring out routes and vowing to climb it one day. We moved back to Colorado when I was in the 4th grade and from then on all I wanted to do was be in the mountains and climb. Looking back, I suppose I started with scrambling, but we didn’t call it that back then, it was just what we did, crawling around on the rocks. Where I grew up, Grand Junction, Colorado, there was a lot of sandstone, my friends and I were lizards moving around the rock. Then in high school and college, I started to learn climbing technique and expanded that with my college climbing partner Joe. He grew up in Colorado Springs and had received quality instruction, he was a great teacher. We pounded pins and clipped into existing pins (peons) for a couple of years. And then it really started.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?
Jim: I climb at Edgeworks for several reasons: it keeps me in shape for climbing outside, it is a great community of people and staff and I like just hanging out there, I’ve made friendships there, I like seeing the kids who are part of the Edgeworks Climbing Team progress and just seeing how they are doing.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?
Jim: I have lots of favorite places: the Bugaboos, the Tetons, the Dolomites, Chominoux.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?
Jim: I suppose the first thing I do is think about climbing: where, when, how. I practice law some of the time, I ski, I work out at the YMCA, I read, I write, I’m very involved in The Mountaineers, I’m on the Board of Downtown on the Go, I go to the Mountains with my wife, I don’t watch TV, I try to be involved with
my community, Tacoma.

What are some interesting facts you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?
Jim: My mother is 91, lives by herself, and drives; watch out if you go to Colorado Springs. I’ve never done a first ascent except for a trip to the Winds when we were grossly off route but muscled-through to the top thanks to the efforts of Chuck Buzzard who lead a very dicy pitch. I’ve climbed Mt. Mckinley, all the volcanos in the Northwest, the Grand a few times (but never Irene’s arete, still on the list), and never in Asia, a great personal disappointment. I’ve been skiing since I was 5 or so, I’ve skied with Stien Ericsson, Billy Kid, and Spider Sabich and Bobby Turner (in his day, the best skier on the planet, put the rest to shame). I still keep in touch with my childhood friends, and there are a bunch. I played college football.

How did you start climbing?
Austin: This last summer, my mom signed me up for a week long camp at Edgeworks.

Why do you climb at Edgeworks?
Austin: I climb at Edgeworks because the staff is very friendly and they really encourage me to get better. I also love that Edgeworks is only 10 minutes from my house so it’s super easy to come all the time.

Where is your favorite place to climb outside?
Austin: The only time I have climbed outside was at Edgeworks summer camp and it was a very awesome experience. I also love to climb all the trees in my neighborhood.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?
Austin: When I am not climbing, I am doing homework and playing with my border collie, Tux. I also play the piano and the saxophone. Outside activities I love to do are bike riding, skiing, and skateboarding.

What are some interesting facts you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?
Austin: If you quit climbing, you quit life. If you can campus your chimney with Santa’s toy bag tied to your feet, he’ll bring you free climbing shoes for life.

Amy and Eric Leonard

Members since 2014 and 2015

Amy and Eric are relatively new members who jumped right in to the full climbing experience that Edgeworks has to offer. From maximizing the use of their monthly guest passes – always bringing in new family and friends, to participating in our monthly member clinics, climbing school courses, private lessons, and guiding services. They are an adventurous duo and we’re happy to be able to share a bit more about them!

How did you start climbing?
Eric: I started climbing when my friend Alex took me to Exit 38 eight years ago. After several climbs, he had me leading, but I didn’t quite know what I was doing. Now I think I do.
Amy: After Eric started climbing, we went as a family to Exit 38 and Vantage. I was the “mom” at the crag, taking care of the kids and possibly trying one route myself. I knew I enjoyed climbing and wanted that to change. At a book club in January, we decided to each try something new and report on it instead of reading a book. I chose climbing and immediately got hooked.
Why do you climb at Edgeworks?
It’s great to be able to climb anytime we only have an hour or two to spare in the middle of our busy lives. We’ve also enjoyed taking classes, learning sport lead; knots, anchors, and rappelling; and private instruction. Edgeworks has a great community feel. Mostly, though, we climb here because it’s fun!
Where is your favorite place to climb outside?
Eric: Sunshine Wall at Frenchman Coulee.
Amy: I have enjoyed every place I’ve climbed outside. I especially enjoy anything that’s part of a bigger climb, even if it’s easy, like the Haystack scramble at Mount Si, the rock portions of Mt. Olympus, and The Brothers. We’ve also hiked the Wonderland Trail and climbed Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier. I hope to do more technical climbs in the future with skills I have gained at Edgeworks and also want to begin trad climbing.
What do you do when you’re not climbing?
Eric: Keeping the world secure while working at Microsoft.
Amy: The bulk of my time is spent mothering and home schooling our six children. I’m Chair of the Washington Homeschool Organization, which supports independent home schooling in our state. For fun, I run, read, hike, cook, backpack, play the piano, and practice yoga. I’m also a live-theatre junkie. There’s a connection between the actors and audience that can never be achieved onscreen.
What are some interesting facts you’d like to share with the Edgeworks community?
Amy: Very few people get enough sleep, which has been linked to both obesity and a shorter life. Adults get just as grumpy from lack of sleep as kids do. So I have mastered the 20-minute nap and consider it the secret to being a good parent.
