Trip Report: Mt. Rainier | July 2018

by Andrew Powell

On July 15, 2018, Edgeworks’ head guide, Tod Bloxham, 4 guests, and I gathered at the gym to prep gear and drive out to the White River Ranger Station to begin our journey up Mt. Rainier.

Day 1
The forecast was good, if a bit too hot. We knew the sky would be clear and that there would be a lot of sunscreen in the coming 4 days. What we didn’t know, is that the standard Emmons-Winthrop route was rapidly falling apart.

The first day was an approach hike into Glacier Basin. The views of the route and mountain on the way to this camp are phenomenal and it serves as a means to ease into the 10’000ft gain of our trip. We enjoyed each-others company, told stories, and spent the evening generally relaxing and appreciating the views.

Day 2
Day two was allocated for snow skills training and the push to Camp Schurman. After a hearty breakfast and a casual start, we moved up the mountain and dialed in some essential climbing skills, like self-arrest and efficiency in snow travel.

As we continued up the mountain, we began to receive reports from other groups who were on their way out of hazardous conditions on the route, including collapsing snow bridges and at least one crevasse fall that required climber extraction. This news was a bit ominous, but Tod and I remained optimistic. Upon reaching Camp Schurman, the climbing rangers on sight gave us a run down on conditions. The standard route was no good and success would require a much more challenging and steeper route.

Day 3
Due to the daytime heat, we opted to rest and use the day to acclimate before having an early dinner and setting out for a 9pm start toward our objective. This allowed everyone to recuperate their energy reserves, and to mentally prepare for the big day. It also gave us the best possible snow conditions for the climb and descent of Mt. Rainier. We were roped up and ready to climb by 8:40pm and climbed through the night.

Day 4 – The Climb
We started out onto the Emmons Glacier via the standard bridge crossing out of camp. This was straight forward and the crossing over to “The Corridor” at 10,200’ was simple. This is where the reports of hazardous conditions and weak bridges were coming from. The climbing rangers advised us that staying climbers right in the more exposed terrain was the best path, as opposed to the typical “up the middle” path.

Part way up The Corridor, I checked my altimeter and realized that we were going to make it. The team had ample time to rest and everyone was climbing strong. We were moving up the mountain faster than expected while maintaining a sustainable pace.

At the top of The Corridor, the standard route leads climbers right to the “The Alpine Meadow”. The heat of the previous two weeks had obliterated this path, and it was in a right state. The alternate was to head climbers left into a large, steep bowl. This proved straightforward, but steep and icy. The cramponing was excellent, but the grade was unrelenting. For hours, we toiled upward; traversing and climbing slopes that make the standard route look easy. We trended far right at the top of the bowl to cross the final bergschrund, and reached the summit at about 5:30am.

We had climbed through the night, seeing both an amazing sunset and a glorious sunrise on route. The descent took us a fair amount of time, as the slopes were so steep. After some food, rest and packing up camp, we headed out to the parking lot and the Edgeworks van.

The trip was a great success and we are super excited for next season!

Spring has arrived!

by Andrew Powell

We can’t let these longer, warmer days of sunshine go to waste and the Edgeworks Guides have been out making the most of it – climbing and guiding at our local PNW crags and beyond! It is the “beyond” that this month’s trip report will focus on. More specifically, rocks colored “Red” and called “Smith“.

Because while mountainous states like Washington and Colorado are experiencing finicky weather with cleansing spring showers, other areas are getting warm and dry sunshine, springtime in the desert and high desert areas of the western US are amazing for climbing.

RED ROCK:

In early April, Andrew met up with Edgeworks’ patron, Neil, for a couple of days of training in the “alpine” like areas deep within the canyons of Red Rock State Park in Nevada. They climbed some stellar classic routes, including Crooked Crack, and had great success exploring unknown climbing deep in Pine Creek Canyon. It was a fun couple of days moving in the warm dry environ!

SMITH ROCK:

2 weeks later, Edgeworks all-stars, Erin and Ryan, joined Andrew at Smith Rock State Park for two days of climbing and got the full tour of the park located in Central Oregon. They climbed a handful of classic routes such as Cinnamon Slab, and some lesser known classics like Trezlar.

With Andrew as their guide, Erin and Ryan, enjoyed 2 full days exploring the park and climbing in areas that most people never visit.

Earn your peaks!

February 1 – April 30, 2018
Put your membership to good use and receive a FREE t-shirt with our 3rd annual members only 90-day challenge!

The Objective:

Earn points by completing a list of challenges including over 100 different activities – from climbing, fitness and check-in challenges to attending socials, interacting with staff, fun games, hula hooping and more.

As points are achieved, 3 different levels of “peaks” are awarded and added to your FREE member challenge t-shirt. It takes 175 points to earn all 3 peaks; with over 300 points available!

First Peak: 50 points  |  Second Peak: 100 points  |  Third Peak: 175 points

The List:

We’re pretty stoked on this year’s newly expanded list of challenges! You can check it out for yourself HERE or pick up a copy at the gym.

In addition to more fitness, climbing game and skills based challenges, the distribution of points has been adjusted to entice both the over and under achievers among us. We predict that it is possible to earn all 3 peaks in one day (IAD) but there are also plenty of really fun challenges that are accessible to all skill levels and will keep you coming back for more points and peaks!

The Shirts:

Points will be tallied once a week by Edgeworks staff and T-shirts will be distributed upon achievement of the first peak (50 points). T-shirts will be labelled with the member’s name and added to a rolling cart located in the back hallway near the bathrooms.

*Current stock/availability may delay the delivery a t-shirt by 1-2 weeks.

Note: Feel free to wear and wash your shirt during the challenge but please refrain from using fabric softener until after your peaks have been added.

Earning/Adding Peaks:

Iron-on peaks will be made available at the front desk along with simple to follow DIY instructions.

Or you can bring your shirt to the monthly Climbers Socials in March, April and May, when we’ll have staff available to add the peaks for you.

Progress:

Members are responsible for tracking their progress and checking the boxes on their challenge sheets as items are completed. To entice those of us with an extra competitive spirit, we will update a public Challenge Board with everyone’s individual points – you know, just in case you want to see how you match up to the achievements of others.

Black Diamond Momentum Climbing Shoes

by Abbie Madlem

Black Diamond’s Momentum climbing shoes have arrived at Edgeworks! This comfortable, entry-level model is perfect for the gym or the crag, finding that sweet spot where all-day comfort meets performance climbing. Don’t let the flat-last fool you! The Momentum won’t slow you down.

Check out some of the tech specs:

Knit Uppers: The knit fabric means that the Momentum requires less break-in time than its counterparts. The fabric is designed to stretch and breath where you most need it, which means less sweaty feet and easy on-off!

Microfiber Liner: The microfiber liner in the front of the shoe minimizes stretch, which means how you buy them is how they should continue to fit.

Neutral, Flat Last: The neutral, flat last of the shoe allows your toes to lie in a neutral position. This is more inviting to newer climbers (your feet won’t be killing you at the end of your session!). They’re also great for more experienced climbers that are looking for a high performance, high comfort shoe (perfect for long days of cragging and long gym sessions)!

Durable Rubber: The rubber on the Momentum is unique in that it’s molded instead of cut from one sheet of rubber. This was inspired by the way that BD forges their carabiners, and is their engineered solution to optimize the shoe’s rubber and rands for weight, consistency, and comfort.

This shoe is unlike any other beginner shoe out there. If you’re curious (we know we were!), don’t take our word for it. Come in and try a pair out!
