August 2011

It's time to up your mental game. Everyone's training their fitness, strength and technique, but it's time to look within and polish your mental ability. Improving your mental focus will make huge gains in your climbing. It's just as important as strength and technique. To help you master your mind, Arno Ilgner is coming to Edgeworks! Come hang out September 9th, during his clinic, and learn the Warrior's Way.

Arno's clinic addresses fear of falling and improving commitment. Everyone will learn how to improve breathing, create flow and momentum, commit more deliberately, trust your body and more. This hands-on course closes with you applying what you've learned on a challenging route.

Date: September 9th
Time: 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. OR 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Cost: $79.00 members / $89 non-members

Space is seriously, seriously limited. Sign up early! Register at the Front Desk. (Did we mention how SERIOUSLY limited the space is? Really, there's only a few spots.)

ArnoArno Ilgner is a climber, author and teacher who instructs climbers (and others) through a unique physical and mental training program. He has helped hundreds of students sharpen their awareness, focus attention and understand their athletic, and life, challenges.

Edgeworks VIP is a subscription service and standard rates apply. Reply "stop" to quit.

Zumba Class

We’re contributing to any and all couch-ditching. Couch 2 Climb is a weekly coaching program for new climbers who want to move quickly into climbing super stardom. Featuring instruction by experienced staff members, Couch 2 Climb gives everyone a chance to work through basic movements and skills. If you want a (very inexpensive) way to improve quickly, Couch 2 Climb is your game. Details at the Front Desk. Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.

SPECIAL DEAL: Tomorrow, August 4th, Couch 2 Climb is FREE!
Limited to ten people so call ahead and reserve your spot.

If you're in the gym looking for a belay, we're thinking you should find one. The new poster and tags floating around the Front Desk will help.

Here's how it works: the orange tag means you're looking for a partner. So, clip one to your harness or chalk bag and keep your eyes pealed for other tags floating around. Once you've met another climber (also wearing a tag) rope up and climb on!

Also, don't forget to return the tags to the board once you've found a climbing partner.

Remember to sign up for the WMI Wilderness First Aid + CPR course, September 23-25. If the back country is your profession or passion, you need the skills to prepare for the unexpected.

The Wilderness Medical Institute has defined the standards in wilderness medicine. For years they've made sure outdoors enthusiasts don't face the unexpected. We're proud to offer the Wilderness First Aid + CPR course at Edgeworks.

Learn about assessment, vital signs, spinal cord injury, shock, wound management, fractures, dislocations, heat and cold injuries, altitude and much, much more. Get ready and register early - before the class fills up!

Course Date: September 23 - 25, 2011
Cost: $200.00 member / $220.00 nonmember

To register, send an email to or call 253-564-4899.
If you're already a Wilderness First Responder, you can renew your certification through this course saving tons of money.

Crag Chasers

Starting this year, Edgeworks will be taking unplanned perfect-day-for-calling-in-sick-and-going-out-and-climbing trips. And you're invited!

Come climb with us on the Edgeworks' Crag Chasers trips. Here's how it works:

1. A few days before our trip, we'll shoot you an email with all the info.

2. You call in sick, pack your gear and come climb.

Keep your eyes peeled for our announcements!

Crushing Tip

Muscle fatigue is probably the principal burden of climbers, especially those newly introduced to the sport. Patrick McCabe suggests a simple way to reduce your fatigued affliction.

When you climb, your arms flutter between two different positions: bent and straight. "One common tendency is to climb with both arms bent." Patrick explains why that's problematic, "in this position both arms exert force and requires a lot of energy." When your arms are straight, the body hangs off your skeletal structure, not your muscles. This position requires significantly less energy.

The fix: alternate between using bent and straight arm positions. A simple practice is to place your hands on two different holds and using your legs, balance between the two holds and arm positions: bent, straight, bent, straight.

Join Patrick Thursday Nights during Couch 2 Climb for more tips and instruction.
