Climbers Building a Community
By Jayson Owens
Recently, I was asked what I like most about climbing. Immediately, I thought ‘the community’, or more accurately, ‘my community’.

My answer is an obvious one to veteran climbers, but many new climbers are surprised by this answer. It’s easy to be confused; the media and movies often portray climbing in a bad light, but for me climbing has always been about meeting new people and being instantly related. Whether you are sharing difficulties on a short bouldering problem or trusting your life to a new friend who is belaying you, a bond of trust is quickly built.

The great thing about climbing is it draws a uniquely diverse crowd. In any given day here, you might climb with an electrician, an architect, a physicist, a musician, an entrepreneur, a ranger, or a fish biologist. Any of whom would happily give you beta on a route you are working or invite you to climb outside for the weekend. Everyone has their own particular reason for climbing, but we all have one thing in common, we love climbing and it turns out that’s all you need to form a lifelong friendship.
